Filmfare Awards

Filmfare Awards Statue Filmfare Awards were introduced in 1954, the same year when National Film Awards were introduced. In contrary to National Awards, which are decided by the expert panel appointed by the Indian Government, Filmfare Awards are decided according to votes by public as well as by the experts. The dual voting method was started from 1956.

Filmfare Award ceremony was first organized in 1954 and was also referred as The Clares after Filmfare critic, Clare Mendionca. For the first time, the winners were decided according to the votes of around 20,000 readers of Filmfare magazine. Only five awards were fetched during the first Filmfare award ceremony held on 21 March 1954. And the first winners of Filmfare Awards were Dilip Kumar (Best Actor for film Daag), Meena Kumari (Best Actress for film Baiju Bawra), Bimal Roy (Best director for film Do Bigha Zameen), Naushad (Best Music for film Baiju Bawra) and the film Do Bigha Zameen as Best Film. But with time, categories are increased by Filmfare Awards and now it is reached to 31 different categories including special awards like lifetime achievement award, R D Burman award and critics awards.
