Karan Johar: Won’t work with Pakistani actors anymore, but the ban is unfair

The Uri attack in which 17 of Indian soldiers attained martyrdom has sparked a series of flak against the neighbouring country for providing support to the dastardly act. While the reaction of the people is a good sign of solidarity with the jawans, there are some who think otherwise. For instance, the banning of Pakistani actors as well as the movies they have played a part in, has generated a mixed response in the Bollywood industry. However, the most affected from this ongoing controversy is Karan Johar as his movie “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” which was all set to release during this Diwali Festival, is facing stiff opposition from MNS. He was also labelled ‘anti-national’ by political parties.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has opposed the release of the movie soon after the ‘Uri’ incident. They also gave an ultimatum to the Pakistani actors to leave Indian within 48 hours, which was duly followed. Though many actors and directors from Bollywood termed prohibiting the release of “ADHM” unjustified, Karan Johar, the director and co-producer, remained silent. But he broke his silence this Tuesday and released a video in which he is seen and heard stating that he is not an anti-national and have high regards for the sentiments of the people. He also said that he will not engage any talent from the neighboring country anymore.

Further, he also pleaded those against the release of the movie to understand the sweat, blood, and hard work put by his 300 crew members behind making the movie, and said banning the movie would be unfair for them. He also added that nothing else matters for him other than his country and believed that the best way to express patriotism was through spreading love as he always did through his work.

Explaining further, he said that when he started the film last year, both India and Pakistani governments were attempting to build a peaceful relationship between them. But now the situation is quite different and he is going through the same sentiments as others.

Priyanka Chopra’s top for a magazine cover creates a storm on social media

Priyanka Chopra

Celebrities are like demigods to fans. Anything they do, say, or wear is imitated by their followers blindly. Being an influential personality, sometimes they fail to realize that their action, words, or attire can cause a repulsion. Though the act by them is carried out inadvertently, it still becomes an issue for a debate. Priyanka Chopra has become the hot topic of debate recently because of one of her latest acts after shooting for a cover page of a travel magazine, Conde Nast Traveller.

Though the cover page is not obscene, the reason of her being in the middle of the controversy is the top she is wearing that has four words on it out of which “Refugee,” “Immigrant,” and “Outsider,” are struck off in red, whereas “Traveller” is intact and clear. As soon as the magazine was out, there was a huge uproar on social media. Many Twitteratis found it insensitive and reckoned that nobody becomes a refugee out of choice.

While Priyanka has not given any explanation on wearing the top, the magazine spokesperson came forward and clarified that the wordings on the top has been interpreted wrongly and their intention has not reached to the people. They gave this statement in defense of the controversial top, “At Condé Nast Traveller, we believe that the opening up of borders and the breaking down of walls can help us discover the world, and open up our minds and hearts. So, when we had actor Priyanka Chopra wear a T-shirt we created on the cover of the 6th-anniversary issue, we had a point to make. And it’s not about privilege or fashion.

“It’s about how our labelling of people as immigrants, refugees and outsiders is creating a culture of xenophobia. We are allowing thousands of innocent people who are forced to cross borders due to unimaginable terror and atrocities to be treated without humanity and empathy. It’s about how we are allowing some powerful leaders to build barriers that make it more difficult for bright, motivated and hardworking people to see more of the world, learn from it and make it better for us all.

“It’s time we demand better and stand against the building of walls, literal and otherwise. We must demand a world free of racism and bigotry and prejudice so that we—and generations after us—may enjoy all the abundance that travel offers, the beauty of the world that is open and rich and diverse in its people and cultures and geographies. And we must, in the midst of our many differences, find and celebrate our commonalities, our oneness. We must recognise that we are all on a journey. Whether we are moving across oceans or just a few kilometres, or in our mind’s eye, into a completely different world, whether we are doing so due to free will or circumstance—we are all travellers.”

The reason behind choosing Priyanka for the cover page was also revealed this way, “And this is why Priyanka Chopra—a star at home and abroad, who has experienced first-hand the opportunities that travel offers—is the perfect ambassador. It’s not about her being a refugee or immigrant or outsider; it’s about her, like us, recognising the power of travel, and joining us in asking everyone to do better for each other.”

Om Puri insults Indian force, backs Pak artists

Om Puri

There is a very popular adage that says, “with age, comes wisdom.” However, some celebrities are proving it wrong and are behaving the opposite. The accomplished and senior actor Om Puri is one of them. At least, his recent statements that he gave to a leading tabloid proves that.

He was asked by the reporter about his opinion on the Uri attack led by the Pakistan-backed terrorists, and whether to ban Pakistani actors in India after that incident. His comment was not only shocking, insensitive, and unpleasant, but also hurting. Without mincing words, he said, ”Who had asked the soldiers to join the army? Who told them to pick the weapons?” His comment was nothing but a proof that he is going senile.

Speaking further about the surgical strike carried out by Indian army, he said, “When the government is taking an action, we all should stay quiet. It hardly matters if we send back the artists from Pakistan, who are working here, or let them stay. I have been to Pakistan six times and have met people from all strata.I have always received love and warmth. If the Pakistani actors leave the projects they are doing here in middle, then people in India (filmmakers) will also face financial loss.”

His statement has drawn flak on social media and also had him a complaint registered against him by ‘Sangharsh,’ a social organization that fights against injustice.
