Mohit Chauhan is an unconventional singer in today’s Bollywood. He started his music career back in 1996 with the inception of his popular musical band known as Silk Route. He specialized in pop and romantic songs during his initial ‘band days’.
Mohit Chauhan was born on 11th of March 1966 in Nahan town of Sirmaur district in Himachal Pradesh to Krishana Rana and B.K. Rana. He completed his schooling from the St. Xavier’s School in Delhi. He went back to Himachal Pradesh to pursue higher studies after completing school. He holds a Master in Science degree in Geology from Dharamshala College in Himachal Pradesh.
He went back to Delhi after completing his education in-spite of his parents’ disagreement. He stayed there for the next 10 years to pursue his career as businessman.
Much like Kishore Kumar, Mohit Chauhan didn’t have any formal training in music. However, musical talent was God gifted to him. His grandfather, Rana Krishna Singh, was a classical singer and a close acquaintance of K. L. Saigal. He is fluent in both Hindi and Pahadi language of Himachal.
Along with his old friend Kim Trivedi, he formed the Silk Route band. Their first releases were ‘Boondein’ and ‘Pehchan’ which got released in 1998. Silk Route catered to different categories of listeners due to its various form of music. The songs were in Hindi, Pahadi and also in English. However, in 2007, the band got dissolved.
He recorded with Sunidhi Chauhan for the first time in ‘Pehli Nazar Mein Darri Thi’ from ‘Road’ in 2002. He also sang for ‘Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hun’ in 2003, ‘Adharm’ in 2003 and ‘Let’s enjoy’ in 2004. In 2005 he composed the songs of ‘Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh’. He also sang the song ‘Guncha’ from the movie.
In 2006, A.R.Rehman gave him a call requesting him to sing the song, ‘Khoon Chala’ from ‘Rang De Basanti’. Since then, there was no turning back for Mohit Chauhan. Pritam approached him in 2007, to sing ‘Tum Se Hi’ from ‘Jab We Met’. He also sang ‘Masakkali’ from ‘Delhi 6′ for Rehman in 2009.
His success stories include, ‘Yeh Dooriyan’ (Love Aaj Kal), ‘Pehli Baar Mohabbat Ki Hai’ (Kaminey), ‘Bheegi Si’ (Rajneeti), ‘Pee Lun’ (Once Upon A Time in Mumbai), ‘Yun Hi’ (Tanu Weds Manu), ‘Tujhe Bhulaa Diya’ (Anjaana Anjaani).
Some other notable tracks by Chauhan has been, ‘Kuch Khaas’ (Fashion), ‘Mann Lafanga’ (Lafangey Parindey), ‘Saiyaara’ (Ek Tha Tiger), ‘Ala Barfi’ (Barfi), ‘Saans’ (Jab Tak Hai Jaan), ‘Rab Ka Shukraana’ (Jannat 2), ‘Tere Mere Beech Mein’ (Shuddh Desi Romance).
In 2011, he sang for Rockstar. The film had fourteen songs in total, composed by A.R Rehman. Mohit Chauhan sang nine songs for the film among which ‘Sadda Haq’ became a youth sensation. Also the track ‘Jo Bhi Main’ from the film earned him the Zee Cine Award and Filmfare Award for the ‘Best Male Playback Singer’ in 2012.
He also sang many jingles for television commercials. The products include Alpenlible, Nescafe, Wheel, Parachute and L’Oreal. He also did sing the title track for Star Parivaar awards in 2011. He was seen in the reality show ‘Music Ka Muqabla’ on Star Plus where he led his team ‘Mohit’s Fighter’ in the show.
Mohit Chauhan has considerable contribution in regional music industries as well. His first break in Bengali films was with the movie, ‘Sheydin Dekha Doyechilo’ and later ‘Paglu’. He also sang a Tamil song ‘Po Nee Po’ for the movie ’3′.
He received two Filmfare Awards till date for ‘Masakali’ of Delhi 6 and ‘Jo Bhi Man’ from Rockstar in 2010 and 2012 respectively.
Reportedly, Mohit Chauhan’s upcoming big ticket musical breakthrough can be ‘Dhoom 3′. Pritam would be the music director of the movie again and the film is scheduled to get released on 20th of December 2013.
