Do you chuckle and smile along when you see a bunch of people lighting up the city through their Happydent smile? Well, the brain and mind behind all this is none other than Prasoon Joshi who also happens to be the esteemed lyrics writer of Aamir Khan’s profound ‘Taare Zameen Par’. Kuch Khushbuye, Yaado Ke Jangal Se Beh Chali
Kuchh Khidkiya, Lamho Ke Dastak Pe Khul Gayi
Kuch Geet Puraane Rakhe The Sirhaane
Kuch Sur Kahiin Khoye The Bandish Mil Gaye
Jeene Ke Ishaare Mil Gaye, Bichde The Kinaare Mil Gaye

‘Phir Milenge’ – a film to spread awareness about AIDS had this beautiful lyrics penned by Prasoon Joshi. It was composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and sung by Shankar Mahadevan himself. The fervid and meaningful lyrics of the song is still loved and remembered by the audiences.

Tu Meri Adhuri Pyas Pyas
Tu Agayi Mann Ko Ras Ras
Ab To Tu Aaja Paas Paas
Hai Guzaarish

Remember Aamir Khan singing these lines under the scorching heat of the rusting desert? ‘Guzaarish’ from ‘Ghajni’ is one of the chart-buster songs that set records in the year 2008. The song just came and swooned over the audiences in one go and it is still played widely all over.

Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gayi, Kismat Pe Aaye Naa Yakeen
Utar Aayi Jheel Mein, Jaise Chaand Utar Ta Hai
Kabhi Haule Haule Dheere Se
Gun Guni Dhoop Ki Tarah Se Tarango Mein Tum
Chhoo Ke Mujhe Guzari Ho Yun
Dekhu Tumhe Ya Main Sunoon, Tum Ho Sukoon
Tum Ho Junoon Kyun Pehre Raat Aayi Tum
Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gayi, Kismat Pe Aaye Naa Yakeen

‘Kaise Mujhe Tu Mil Gayi, Kismat Pe Aaye Na Yakeen’, again another masterpiece from ‘Ghajni’. The song depicts the doubtful and astonishing state of a lover who is under disbelief even after obtaining his desired love. He went on to describe the advent of love by comparing it with the slow and beautiful appearance of the moon’s shadow on a stream of river. Prasoon Joshi’s connection with nature and love can be significantly noticed here.

Main Kabhi Batlata Nahin
Par Andhere Se Darta Hoon Main Maa
Yun To Main, Dikhlata Nahin
Teri Parwaah Karta Hoon Main Maa
Tujhe Sab Hai Pata, Hai Na Maa

This has been an astounding piece by Prasoon Joshi that brought tears in the eyes of every listener. ‘Maa’, an everlasting bond that a human shares since his birth and the unsaid emotions of a child is penned down beautifully by the lyricist. The simple yet extraordinary words of the song would touch every heart that has experienced or has been deprived of mother’s love.

Rone De Aaj Humko Do Aankhen Sujaane De
Baahon Mein Lene De Aur Khud Ko Bheeg Jaane De
Hai Jo Seene Mein Qaid Dariya Woh Choot Jaayega
Hai Itna Dard Ke Tera Daaman Bheeg Jaayega

The lines are recited by Aamir Khan himself in the song ‘Mere Haath Mein Tera Haath Ho’ from ‘Fanaa’. It represents the deep sorrow of a solitary man who wants to shed tears to ease down his pain and find solace in the arms of his lover. The words are graceful and are penned splendidly by Prasoon Joshi.

Chanda Chamke Cham Cham Cheekey Chokhana Chor
Cheeti Chaatey Cheeni Chatori Cheeni Khor
Kitna Mushkil Ye Gaana Zara Ga Ke Dikhana
Chanda Cheeni Chamkey Chatay Chokhana Cheekey Chor

The parody is again a piece of writing by Prasoon Joshi from the movie ‘Fanaa’. Anybody would fumble once while trying to utter the words together for the first time. But the fun attached with the parody is undeniable and only Prasoon Joshi can create such a happy-go-lucky environment with his lyrics.

Abhi Abhi Huaa Yaqeen Ki Aag Hai Mujh Mein Kahi
Hui Subah Main Jal Gaya
Suraj Ko Main Nigal Gaya
Roobaroo Roshni Hai
Dhuaan Chhataa Khula Gagan Mera
Nayi Dagar Naya Safar Mera
Jo Ban Sake Tu Hamsafar Mera
Nazar Mila Zara
Roobaroo Roshni Hai

Does this piece depicting rebellion and the rising of the youth against the increasing corruption in the country arouse a sense of revolt within you too? The fierce words are carrying the blaze of flames that would inspire the youth towards the foundation of a new dawn paving the way for a progressive country. Prasoon Joshi did hit the chord with these lyrics and was nominated as the best lyricist for this song from Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Rang De Basanti’ at every award ceremony in the year of 2006.

Lukka Chuppi Bahut Hui Saamne Aa Jaa Naa
Kahaan Kahaan Dhoonda Tujhe
Thak Gayi Hai Ab Teri Maa
Aaja Saanjh Hui Mujhe Teri Fikar
Dhundhla Gayi Dekh Meri Nazar …Aa Ja Na

Rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by A. R. Rahman, ‘Lukka Chupi’ is a song by a mother who is anxiously searching for her son. The hide-and-seek between the child and her mom is remarkably penned by Prasoon Joshi.

Bin Datsak Ke Aaye Jo Pyar Soona Hai
Bin Bole Mann Khole Wo Adhikar Soona Hai
Lamho Ki Ungli Thaam Ke
Yaadein Aangan Mein Aa Jaati Hai
Ha Maine Chukar Dekha Hai
Ha Maine Chukar Dekha Hai

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s unforgettable movie ‘Black’ had only one solo song, ‘Maine Chukar Dekha Hai’. It tells the story of a blind girl who in unable to see but yet holds the desire to see and witness the world. She eventually fulfills her wish as she comes to know everyone and everything around her through the art of touch. This is another brilliant piece written by Prasoon Joshi.

Saiyaan Ched Dewe
Nanad Chutki Leve
Sasural Genda Phool
Saas Gaari Deve
Dewar Samjha Leve
Sasural Genda Phool

Ever heard anyone comparing ‘sasural’ with ‘genda phool’ before? Prasoon Joshi’s lyrics made a new comparison trend and ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ became the talk of the town. Even a serial on Star Plus was later titled as the same. From romance to patriotism, parody to comedy, he is adept with all genres of lyrics writing.

Angdai Le Phir Karwat Badal Kar

Taare Zameen Par

‘Taare Zameen Par’ is regarded as his best work till date. Children, the gentle and little souls in our world is often broken and tarnished with the burden and pressure of the real and harsh world. Prasoon Joshi presented children as stars of the world who might get lost even before blossoming while running behind numbers and percentages. The writer portrayed his concern and emotions beautifully through these words and again he connects the human world and the shade of nature in an overwhelming manner.
To the surprise of many, Joshi is a trained vocalist who has sung for the All India Radio as well. The ever so talented man still continues to write and deliver out more literary masterpieces.
