Aishwarya Rai was born on 1st November 1973 in the Mangalore (Karnataka). She is daughter of Vrinda Rai (writer) and Krishnaraj Rai (marine biologist). Aishwarya has one brother named Aditya who is engineer and produced her film "Dil Ka Rishta" in 2003. Though she was born in Manglore but after her birth her family shifted to Mumbai where she completed her school from Arya Vidya Mandir Highschool and college from Jai Hind College and Ruparel College.
When she was in college, she starts modeling. In the year 1994, she participated in "Miss India" contest and she was second winner behind the Sushmita Sen. She also won "Miss World" title during the same year. There she got Miss Photogenic Award also. After winning the contest she moved towards acting.
She started her film career with the film "Iruvar" released in 1997 directed by Mani Ratnam. Her first film in the Bollywood was "Aur Pyar Ho Gaya" with the actor Bobby Deol but the film was unsuccessful to hit at the box office. Her first successful film was "Jeans" which was in Tamil film directed by S.Shankar and got Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Film was released on 1998. Some of her hit films were "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" released in 1999, "Taal" in 1999, "Mohabbatein" and the film "josh".
Aishwarya performed big budget film "Devdas" in 2002 with the co-stars Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan. Film was directed Sanjay Leela Bansali. This film was super hit film of the year. She won her second Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Aishwarya becomes Jury in Cannes Film Festival from 2002. She performed foreign films also such as "Bride and Prejudice" released in 2004. Her item song "Kajra re"from the film "Bunty Aur Bubly" was much hit.
She performed two films in 2006 which were "Umrao Jaan" and "Dhoom 2". Both the films were not so hit on the box office. In Dhoom 2 she performed opposite to Hritik Roshan. For this film she got nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Actress. In 2007, she performed in "Guru" with Abhishek Bachchan and film was directed by Mani Ratnam. Film based on lifestyle of Dhirubhai Ambani. Film was run well on box office. Her latest released film was "Jodha Akabar" with the co-star Hritik Roshan.
