She was born in Punjabi family. Shivinder Singh, her father was in army and her mother, Rukhsana Sultan was in Politics. Her father was Punjabi-Sikh and mother was Muslim. Her grandfather named Sir Sobha Singh was Civil Contractor in the New Delhi. She got married with the actor Saif Ali Khan who is 12 years smaller than her in the 1999. Both of them have one son named Ibrahim and one daughter, Sara. They got divorced in 1994. Now days Amrita living with her two children.
Amrita performed her first film "Betaab" released in 1983. This film did well at box office and in this film she performed opposite with Sunny Deol. Some of her successful films were "Sunny" released in 1984, "Mard" in 1985, "Saaheb" in 1985, "Chameli Ki Shaadi" in 1986, film "Naam" in 1986 and the film "Khudgarz" released in the year 1987. From these films "Mard" film was super hit film. In this film she performed with Mithun Chakraborty. She performed many films with the actors Sunny Deol, Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor. She not only performs leading roles in the films but also performs villainous role in the films "Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman" in 1992 and the film "Aaina" released in 1993.
