C. Ramchandra, who was also known with nicknames like Annasaheb, Ram Chitalkar and Shyammo, was born in 1918 in Putnatambe, Maharashtra. He had acted and sung in many Marathi films and was also a respected composer of early films in India. He is best remembered for his young, enthusiastic, light hearted songs. It is also believed that C. Ramchandra had introduced the rock 'n' roll music in India before it became popular in West. It's not only his part of expertise. He had done many experiments with Indian-Western music like jazzy song Meri Jaan Sunday Ke Sunday from film Shehnai. Also he introduced cabaret music with songs like 'Shola Jo Bhadake' and 'Ye Deewaana Ye Parwaana'. No doubt he is gem of his time, who had experimented with many styles of music.
C. Ramchandra learnt music from Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya music school and was a student of Vinayakbua Patwardhan. Ramchandra broke into films as actor with Y.V.Rao's film 'Naganand'. It didn't do well at box office. However, followed by it he also acted in Minerva Movietone's films 'Saeed-E-Havas' and 'Atma Tarang'. By the time he also played harmonium for Minerva's Bindu Khan and Habib Khan.
Ramchandra became a music director with the Tamil films Jayakkodi and Vanamohini. However, he broke as music director in Hindi films with Bhagwan's film 'Sukhi Jiwan' in 1942. Later he also gave successful music to Bhagwan's films 'Albela', 'Shin Shinaki Bubla Boo'. His youthful, adolescent, enthusiastic, and hilarious music as best conveyed on screen by comedian Bhagwan. He also lent the same kind of music for comedy team of Gope and Yakub in films Saaqi and Patanga.
Many songs of Ramchandra were sung by the veteran Lata Mangeshkar. Also the veteran composer Madan Mohan worked under Ramchandra for the film 'Shabistan (1951)'. Madan Mohan was fully influenced by Ramchandra's music as we found the flavor of many Ramchandra's music in his own compositions. However we found the more dancing effect in Ramchandra's music, while we found the waltzing effect found muted in Madan Mohan's music.
Ramchandra worked mostly with lyricists Santhoshi and Rajendra Krishan. However he also worked with every other top lyricist of the time like Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailendra, Jan Nissar Akhtar, Shakeel Badayuni, Pradeep, Noor Lakhnavi and Krishan.
Besides Hindi and Marathi films, he had also worked on Bhojpuri, Tamil and Telgu films as a composer. In 1953, he turned as producer with New Sai Productions and produced films like Lehren, Jhanjhar and Duniya Gol Hai. Later he also composed music for Marathi films like Gharkul and Dhananjay in the late 60s. However, this multitalented persona was passed by on January 5, 1982.
