A bhangra/pop singer, Daler Mehndi was born on 18th August 1967. As a Sikh he was born and raised in Patana, India. At the age of five he started singing. His early influences on music are his parents and they taught him Shabad's and ragas from the Guru Granth Sahib.
He spent three years in learning Harmonium, Tabla and refining his voice at the age fourteen. His uncle Raahat Ali Khan Saheb taught him to play Tabla and harmonium. He was a student of traditional Punjabi music and he released his first album that had broken sales records in India.
In 1986 Daler Mehndi married with Daljit Kaur and they have three children currently. Before forming a band he went to San Francisco, United States and worked there as a cab driver. At the beginning he sang the Gazals of poets Firaq Gorakhpuri and Qateel Shifai.
In the 1992, because of a car accident Mehendi had spent several years in court. Then he recorded many successful albums in India and also sung many songs in Bollywood movies since 1995. In 1994, Mehndi earned the award for Voice of Asia International Ethnic and Pop Music Contest. In recent years his international popularity has grown allowing him to tour the United States.
In 1995 his debut album Bolo Ta Ra Ra was so popular. Overall half a million copies of album were sold within just four months of its release and it was recorded as best-selling non-soundtrack album in Indian chart history. Daler Mehndi become a superstar and earned the honor of Channel V's Best Male Pop Singer Award.
For 1997's Ho Jayegi Bale Bale and 1996's Dard Di Rab Rab Daler Mehndi earned a title. he gained enormous popularity after the appearances in the films Arjun Pundit and Mrityudata. Then after Daler started playing sell-out performances worldwide.
The title song from Mehndi's album Tunak Tunak Tun was the first music video to make use of bluescreen technology in India and the song has become an Internet phenomenon. The song gained publicity because of Daler Mehndi's wild dance and has led to many parodies and homages.
To make a cleaner environment, Mehndi has established the Daler Mehndi Green Drive in Delhi. He also donated 12 million rupees to Cargyle charities, 85 million rupees to the green drive and constructed 16 houses in Gujarat after an earthquake there. He also helped street children in Kenya and rehabilitate victims of the Orissa cyclone.
