Geeta Dutt was one of the most successful female singers of 50s and 60s. She was the premier singer along with Lata Mangeshkar during 50s. After the entry of Lata Mangeshkar no other female singer survived except Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum.
Geeta Dutt was born on November 23, 1930 in a rich Bengali family in Faridpur, East Bengal. Her family was of zamindaar's family. At the age of 12, Geeta Dutt moved to Dadar, Mumbai along with her family. Geeta Dutt took training in music under the guidance of music director, composer Hanuman Prasad. Dutt made her debut in Hindi film industry as a chorus singer for a song in film Bhakht Prahlad (1946). She sung only two lines to the song, but it amazed everyone in the recording studio.
The film which established her as a prominent singer was Do Bhai in 1947. Music to the film was given by S.D. Burman. The film went on to become hit, while Geeta Dutt became a top singer with it. During the starting days Geeta Dutt was famous for her bhajans and sad songs. But with S.D. Burman she sang the western, club and seductive songs. S. D. Burman created new identity for her. Geeta Dutt and S.D. Burman together gave hit songs in Devdas (1955) and Pyaasa (1957). A song 'Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Lagalo' from Pyaasa was one of her hit numbers.
The other composer who given a different identity to Geeta Dutt was O.P. Nayyar. He gave her a stylish and fashionable style. They together worked for Baazi. Later Geeta Dutt went on to sing different kinds of songs like soft, lively, sad, romantic and teasing songs. She was turned out as top singer during the late fifties. She was the one among two singers, who managed to hold her foot in the industry under the influence of Lata Mangeshkar. Shamshad Begum was the another singer who survived against Lata.
Along with playback singing Geeta Dutt also had done many stage shows. She also has acted in few films as heroine.
By the 1957, Geeta Dutt and Guru Dutt found rough patches in their marriage. They fought and resumed many a times. Guru Dutt was romantically involved with actress Waheeda Rehman. The friction in their marriage also affected her singing career. At the time many music directors complained about her that she was not easily available for rehearsals and recordings.
At the same time S. D. Burman broke with Lata Mangeshkar, so hw was thinking of making Geeta as his premier singer. But she was not available easily due to her marriage rifts. So S. D. Burman turned to Lata's sister Asha Bhosle and started working with her. Due to all this Geeta began drinking and which become her lifelong tragedy.
Later in 1964, Guru Dutt died because of overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol. Many depicted it as suicide, which was his third attempt. Due to the incidence Geeta Dutt suffered a severe nervous breakdown. The same time she caught into the economical problems. To overcome this Dutt started doing stage shows. She also did a Bengali film Bhadu Bharan (1967) as an actress. Still famous for her singing, Geeta Dutt died at the age of 41 in 1972.
Geeta Dutt married director Guru Dutt on 26 May 1953. Their family was against the marriage but they managed to get over of it and married in 1953. The couple together has two sons (Tarun and Arun) and one daughter (Nina).
