Education And Early Life

Genelia completed her schooling from the Apostolic Carmel High School in Bandra. She did her Bachelors In Management Studies from the St. Andrews College in Bandra. She appeared for the last examination of her degree when she was already shooting for her debut movie 'Tujhe Meri Kasam'. However, Genelia initially never wanted to be an actress and always aspired to be a MNC executive.

She has been a state level athlete and a national level football player during her school days.

Career In Modelling

Genelia was spotted as the bridesmaid in a wedding and was roped in to appear in a commercial when she was barely 15. She was selected for a Parker Pen advertisement with Amitabh Bachchan just a day before her exams. Inspite of her refusal initially, the director of the commercial made her agree to shoot the ad with Big B. She also went on to appear in the commercial of Fair & Lovely 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Debut Movie

Genelia's debut movie 'Tujhe Meri Kasam' opposite Riteish Deshmukh was released in 2003. Even after turning down the offer once, she agreed to do the film after watching its Telugu version. However, the film didn't do well commercially and bombed at the box office.

Rise In The South Industry

S. Shankar, director from the Tamil film industry, was impressed with Genelia since her Parker Pen ad with Amitabh Bachchan. He roped her in for the female lead in his 2003 superhit movie 'Boys'.

In the year of 2003, Genelia had 3 major releases in 3 languages; 'Tujhe Meri Kasam' (Hindi), 'Boys' (Tamil), 'Satyam' (Telugu). For her stupendous performance in 'Tujhe Meri Kasam', critic Taran Aadarsh wrote, "Genelia is a wonderful performer. She catches you unaware with a performance that's natural to the core".

In 2004, she appeared in her second Hindi movie, 'Masti' opposite Riteish Deshmukh alongside Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani, Amrita Rao and Tara Sharma. The film faired well at the box office and critics praised her performance in the film as a scary and strict wife. She again had two more releases in 2004, Samba (Telugu) and Sye (Telugu), both were successful at the box office.

In 2006, she was signed up for many Telugu movies. Telugu film 'Bommarillu' was a blockbuster at the box office and also can be regarded as a turning point in her career. She received the Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Actress and the Nandi Special Jury Award for 'Bommarillu'.

Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa - Blockbuster

After continuous successful stints at the South Indian film industry, Genelia came back to Bollywood again in 2008 with 'Mere Baap Pehle Aap' opposite Akshay Khanna and starring alongside Paresh Rawal. But her turning point movie in Bollywood stood out to be 'Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na' opposite Imran Khan. The film was an out an out success and did record setting business at the box office. It did well both in national as well as in overseas market.

The next year in 2009, she appeared in 'Life Partner' opposite Fardeen Khan. Although the movie failed both critically and commerecially, her immediate next Telugu release 'Katha' made her win another Nandi Special Jury Award.

In 2011, she portrayed the character of a Muslim princess in the Malayalam movie 'Urumi'. Genelia had to learn martial arts, horse riding and sword fighting to fit the character of a warrior princess. The film was a major breakthrough in her career as it for the first time gave her the opportunity to portray the not-so-bubbly girl on screen. The same year she also appeared in the action packed Bollywood movie 'Force'.
