Gulshan Devaiah is a bollywood actor who started his acting career as a stage artist. He has gained immense popularity for his unconventional roles in movies such as; Goliyon Ki Rasleela- Ramleela, Hate Story, Shaitan and Hunterrr.

Family:

Gulshan was born as the only son of Sri Devaiah and his wife Pushpalatha at BEL hospital, Bengaluru. His parents worked as officers at Bharat Electronics LTD. They were highly interested in literature, light music and drama. Gulshan had always seen his parents engaged in such activities right from his childhood and they always encouraged and recognized his inclination towards these artistic activities from a very early stage.

Education:

The actor procured his primary education from Clunty Convent and thereafter he completed his schooling from St. Joseph's Indian High School, Bengaluru. He then attended BEL Pre- University College. After his PU, he decided to take up Fashion Designing and graduated from the National Institute Of Fashion Design. Right from his primary school, Gulshan was always involved in various activities such as dramas or skits. He was known to be a good stage performer in his school as well as in his neighboring schools.

Life as a stage artist

His popularity as a stage artist was not only restricted to his high school; he slowly became popular as an actor working with various English Theater groups in Bengaluru. His most commendable stage play has been the Harami Theater's " Butter and Mashed Banana." In this play, he had shared the stage with eminent artists such as; Vivek Madan and Vinod Ravindran.

Despite of his accelerating career in bollywood; the actor had once mentioned that there can never be a goodbye to stage as he considers theater to be his teacher. He will always try to maintain a balance between cinema and theater.

Career:

At a very tender age of ten, Gulshan knew that he wanted to be an actor. However, before taking up acting as his career, he had varied work experiences ranging from consulting to stage plays. He feels that working as a fashion designer saved his life. He had ten years experience in this industry and that helped him to earn money to follow his dream of being an actor. He had also taught at Wigan and Leigh college, Bengaluru; before he left for Mumbai to realize his dreams. In the year 2009, he had attended a two week Intensive Drama Program(IDP) in Mumbai and finds it critical in his development as an actor. He was already an established stage actor; this workshop only helped him to channelize his thoughts. He learned about various techniques that helped him perform better in front of the camera. He had the opportunity to work with the masters and counts this experience as a source of his inspiration.

Debut:

Gulshan's first film was Anurag Kashyap's "That Girl in Yellow Boots." His performance in the movie was noticed and appreciated by many film makers. The film was first screened in the year 2010 at Toronto International Film Festival; however, the commercial release of the movie took place a year later in 2011.

First film to release:

Gulshan's first film to release was Shaitaan - a Bejoy Nambiar film. The movie was released in the month of June 2011. In the movie, he played a character with various shades; from good to grey. His eccentric role in the movie caught the attention of audience, film makers and critics. The movie was honored with number of awards including Filmfare awards, Screen awards and Zee cine awards.

Journey 2012-2013:

In the year 2012, the actor appeared in the movie "Hate Story" along with actress Paoli Dam. He again portrayed a negative role, as in his previous movie. The actor agreed to the fact that, most of his movies show him in the negative role and he really enjoys it. Unlike many actors, Gulshan is not afraid of getting type-casted in one specific type of role. In the same year, the actor worked in the movie Peddler; that was not very successful at the box office.

Goliyon ki rasleela - Ramleela:

The actor was at his best in the movie Ramleela; that gained him immense appreciation and popularity in the industry. He did not require any auditions to play the role of Bhavani in the movie and considers himself lucky to get an opportunity to work in this movie. It really proved to be a huge booster for his acting career.

Hunterrr- the first as a protagonist:

The actor was mostly a part of ensemble cast in his previous movies. He played a lead role in the movie Hate Story; however it was a negative role and did not appear to be that prominent, as lead roles are expected to be. The year 2015 brought enough surprises for Gulshan; as it was the first time, he got a chance to shed his villainous image and act in a lead comic role. He draws his inspiration from Amol Palekar for his role as Mandar in the movie. The film got released on 20th March 2015 and made a business of 4.78 Cr in the first week.

Upcoming Movies:

The actor is expected to appear in Soni Razdan's movie; Love Story with Kalki Koechin and Ali Fazal followed by Carbaret.
