Hridayanath Mangeshkar is an eminent music composer and singer of Indian Hindi and Marathi film industry. For his work, he has given the title Pandit from Government of Maharashtra. Also he has conferred the name BhaavGandharva from Shankaracharya.
Hridayanath Mangeshkar was born on October 26, 1937. He was the only son to his father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. However he has four sisters Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena. Like his sisters, he also took first lessons in music from their father Deenanath. His father was also a classical singer as well as owner of a theatrical company called Balwant Sangeet Mandali. Hridayanath is youngest amongst all his siblings. He was very small when his father died.
Hridayanath later took training from Ustad Amir Khan. Hridayanath put his foot into film industry with Akash Ganga, a Marathi film, in 1955. Followed by it he had given music for number of Hindi and Marathi films. Marathi films of his hit composition includes Nivdung, Sansar, Umbartha, Jait Re Jait, Haa Khel Savlyancha, Taambadi Mati, Mahananda, Pavana Kathachi Dhondi, Janaki and many more.
His hit Marathi numbers includes 'Saagara Praan Talmalala Saagara', 'Jambhul Picklya Zaada Khali', 'Amhi Thakar Thakar', 'Laajun Haasane An', 'Visru Nako ShreeRaama Mala', 'Nako Devaraya Ant Asa Paahu', 'Maaghe Ubha Mangesh Pudhe Ubha', 'Ala Ala Vaara', 'Anandi Anand Gade' and many more.
However his composition in Hindi films is best recognized with films Maya Memsaab, Lekin, Yash Chopra's Mashaal, Dhanwaan and Lal Salaam. However Lekin was biggest hit for him as a music composer. In Lekin, he gave the hit numbers like 'Yara Seeli Seeli' and 'Kesariya Balama'. Hridayanath won a National Award in 1991 for Lekin.
Hridayanath is very choosy about films. Although he had done very few films, whatever he has created is just immortal. He is also well known for taking poems for his compositions. Also he is famous for his complex compositions. So the singer require is also should have same knowledge and depth. The song which shows such example is freedom fighter Veer Savarkar's poem 'Saagara Pran Talamalala' from film Veer Savarkar. This elegant but yet complex composition is sung by Mangeshkar brothers and sisters.
Despite film music, he had composed a non-film album Dnyaneshwar Mauli, Chala Vahi Des (featuring poems of saint Meerabai), Meera Soor Kabeera (includes work of Kabeer, Soordas and Meerabai). He also released the album Ghalib, containing ghazals of veteran poet Mirza Ghalib.
