Irshad Kamil started off his career as a script writer for television serials. He penned the screenplays of various successful television ventures that includes 'Na Jaiyo Pardes', 'Kahaan Se Kahaan Tak', 'Sanjeevani', 'Choli' and 'Kartavya'. Manish Goswami gave him his first break in Mumbai when he asked him to write dialogues for his television series 'Kartavya'. He also penned for Pankaj Kapoor's television production 'Drishtaant'.
Irshad Kamil was introduced in Bollywood for the first time as a lyrics writer through Sandesh Shandilya's 'Socha Na Tha'. Sandesh, being the first composer with whom Kamil worked, he got to learn the entire process of a song creation and recording from Sandesh Shandilya. He went on to work with the composer again in his next big film 'Chameli' starring Kareena Kapoor.
Irshad Kamil got his due recognition through Imtiaz Ali's 'Jab We Met' and 'Rockstar. His versatility is proven through his 'Aaoge Jab Tum O Saajna', 'Tum Se Hi', 'Yeh Ishq Haye' from 'Jab We Met' or 'Sadda Haq', 'Nadaan Parindey' from 'Rockstar' or even 'Tinka Tinka' from 'Karam'.
Apart from that he has also penned for 'Love Aaj Kal', 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan', 'Son Of Sardar', 'Mausam', 'Aashiqui 2' and many more. 'Aaj Din Chadeya' and 'Chor Bazaari' from 'Love Aaj Kal' earned him a lot of accolades and awards.
He has worked with almost every big composer of his time including A. R. Rahman, Vishal-Shekhar, Pritam Chakraborty, Himesh Reshammiya, Jeet Ganguly and M. M. Kreem.
He also directed the movie '3 Houses' in 2005 and appeared as an actor in the 1998 release 'Train To Pakistan'
