Javed Ali's father Hamid Husain is widely known as gurbani, qawwali and kirtan singer and he was the fist teacher of Javed Ali. After that Javed learn music from Majid Khan and Mallu Khan. Javed says that classical music assists a playback singer to survive in Hindi films.

Kalyanji, the veteran music man was impressed by the Javed's singing and told his father that he would pay all the educational expenses of Javed if he stays in Mumbai. But Javed went to his home at Delhi, where he earned his singing skills and return to the Mumbai in 1999.

Initially, Javed only wanted to become a gazal singer, but Kalyanji carved a path for him to becoming a playback singer. Javed started working in the Hindi films after Kalyanji asked him that why he didn't want to sing in Hindi films. Singing in the Hindi films was not that much difficult for Javed Ali because he was already a trained classical singer.

First time he sang a song in Viju Shah's film Beti No. 1 (2000) with Anuradha Paudwal, but the film did not do well. After that he sang 'A ding-dang-do' song from the movie Paagalpan along with Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan, Vicky and Harvard. And from this he get noticed by the people.

Every person in the Bollywood wants money and favorable public reputation, but Javed Ali is far away from this type of people. His rise to popularity has been very slow and steady. He just want to become a good singer. He was played a part in the song Kajraa re from movie Bunty Aur Babli (2005) and He got an exceeded importance from the singers Alisha Chinai and Shankar Mahadevan.

He sang his first solo Ab Ghar Aaja from movie Haasil which was his breakthrough performance. Javed Ali dubbed the song for Jatin-Lalit, but Tigmanshu Dhulia, a well known director like his voice and continued his voice for the further movies.

The songs kept coming in ranging to Bheegi Hui Koi Shaam Hai (Chameli) from Chhalka Chhalka (Aankhen). He sang songs from the recent movie My Friend Ganesha and worked with well known music director and singer A.R. Rahman in some regional films.

He got response from his fans after the song Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein from Naqaab and finally he finds fame knocking at his door. Recently his song Nagaada Nagaada from Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur starrer Jab We Met is creating waves. He had taken alaap for the song sung by Shaan for the film Marigold. His forthcoming films include Jodha Akbar, Aa Nach Le.
