Jaya was born on 19 April 1948 in Jabalpur. She was from Bengali family. Her father, Taroon Kumar Bhaduri was great writer, stage actor and journalist. She completed her schooling from St. Joseph's Convent School from Bhopal. At the age of fifteen, she performed small role in "Mahanagar" which was in Bengali and directed by Satyajit Ray.
She got first break in the Bollywood movie "Guddi". In this film she played role of school girl with the film actor Dharmendra. Hrishikesh Mukherjee gave her first chance for the film Guddi released in 1971. After this film she became hit. Jaya was very famous with her natural looks and flagrant talent.
After Guddi she gives many hit films such as "Jawani Diwani", "Koshish", "Anamika" and the film "Bawarchi". She also give many hit films with her spouse Amitabh Bachchan such as "Zanjeer" released in 1973, "Abhimaan" in 1973, "Chupke Chupke" in 1975 and the film "Sholay" released in the year 1975.
She got married with film actor Amitabh Bachchan on 3rd June 1973. Both have two children one daughter and one son. Daughter Shweta was born when Jaya was doing shooting of film Sholey. Son Abhishek Bachchan also an actor. Her marriage life is good but she had up and downs because her husband's affair with film actress Rekha and that issue was publicized by the media. Abhishek Bachchan (her son) married with actress Aishwarya Rai on 20 April 2007. From her sister Shweta, she has two grandchildren Navya Naveli and Agastya Nanda.
As a leading actress her last film was "Silsila" released in 1981 and performed with Amitabh Bachchan but the film was flopped at box office. She also wrote story of film "Shehenshah" in which lead actor was again her husband. She received Filmfare Award for this film as a supporting actress. Jaya then performed films "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham" in 2001, "Kal Ho Naa Ho" in 2003 and played role of Preity Zinta and the latest movie "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" with Abhishek Bachchan, Konkana Sen and Rani Mukherjee.
Jaya Bachchan participated in politics and joined the Samajwadi Party. She then becomes Member of Parliament and representing Rajya Sabha. Recently she was disqualified from MP post. She comes back to Samajwadi Party's MP in July of 2006.
