Kalyanji and Anandji were brothers, who formed music director team Kalyanji-Anandji. Kalyanji-Anandji was one of the prominent composers of 1970s and early 1980s. They are one of the popular composers, whose beautiful compositions are like never dying. Their popular songs includes 'Chandan Sa Badan', 'Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Mann Mera', 'Khaaike Paan Banaaras Wala', 'Yeh Mera Dil', 'Mere Desh Ki Dharti', 'Zindagi Ka Safar Hai Ye Kaisa Safar', 'Yaari Hai Imaan Mera' and many more. They came to recognition with film like Kora Kagaz and Saraswati Chandra. For the same film they won Filmfare Awards as well.
Kalyanji and Anandji were born to Veerji Shah. Kalyanji was born on June 30, 1928, while Anandji was born in 1933. Their family moved to Mumbai from Kutch, Gujrat, where his father wanted to start the business of Kirana (provision store). They grown up in Girgaum, Mumbai amongst Marathi and Gujarati neighborhood and also there were some talented musical people. Kalyanji and Anandji started learning music from a music teacher who was not able to pay the bills of Provision store of their father. Despite being successful musicians, Kalyanji and Anandji were also best known for their humility. While the duo gives this credit to their father. They said that their father was not much educated but was wise enough to make a difference.
In their early career Kalyanji formed orchestral groups called 'Kalyanji Virji' and 'Party - Show Ki Duniya'. The orchestra was used to perform at Mumbai and nearby. Kalyanji Anandji were also assisted Hemant Kumar in early days. Kalyanji later got the chance as independent film music director with the film Samrat Chandragupta in 1959. Followed by it Kalyanji also gave few more films independently. The following year Anandji also joined Kalyanji and they formed a team Kalyanji-Anandji.
The time when Kalyanji-Anandji entered in the film industry, was already having big composers like Naushad, S.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, and Hemant Kumar. It was tough to make mark amongst them from any new composers. But with their talent Kalyanji-Anandji made a place for themselves. Kalyanji-Anandji started working together on Satta Bazar and Madari in 1959. Their first major hit was Raj Kapoor starrer Chalia in 1961. Songs from the film 'Chhaila Mera Naam', 'Dum Dum Diga Diga', and 'Mere Tute Huye Dil Se' were all topped the charts.
Followed by it they struggled till 1965, when the duo gave hit songs in films Himalay Ki God Mein (1965) and Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965). These two films established them as prominent music composers in the film industry. Since then they never looked back and went on to give number of hit compositions in films like Zanjeer, Upkar, Mahal, Hera Pheri, Rafoo Chakkar, Hath Ki Safai, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Blackmail, Don, Tridev, Bluff Master (1963), Raaz (1967) and many more. The songs 'Mere Desh Ki Dharti' from Upkar and 'Yaari hai imaan mera' from Zanjeer are their all time hits.
The composer duo found a good rapport with singers Mukesh and Kishore Kumar. Mukesh has sung 91 songs for the duo. Their hit songs along with Mukesh include 'Naina Hai Jaadu Bhare', 'Chandan Sa Badan' and 'Main Toh Ek Khwaab Hoon'. While their hit songs along with Kishore Kumar includes 'Khaike Paan Banaraswaala', 'Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas', 'Priye Praneshwari', 'Jai Govindam Jai Gopalam' to name few. Also their favorite singer was Mohammed Rafi. They refer Rafi as- a versatile, technically perfect, devoted and perfectionist. Also they gave the hit numbers 'O Saathi Re Tere Bina Bhi Kya Jeena' (Muqaddar Ka Sikander) and 'Yeh Mera Dil' (Don) with Asha Bhosale.
The films Saraswatichandra (1968), Kora Kagaz (1974) were also the major hits of their career. Kalyanji-Anandji won Filmfare Awards for both the films. Also Lata Mangeshkar won her first National Award for the song 'Roothe Roothe Piya' from Kora Kagaz.
Apart from successful music composers, they are also well-known for their humility, non-egoistic, non-self centered nature. The duo was also responsible for bringing up new talent. They have given first chance to many prominent singers like Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam and Sapna Mukherjee. While they also have gave breaks to veteran lyricists like Anjaan, Gulshan Bawra, Anand Bakshi, Indeevar, Qamar Jalalabadi and for many others. They also formed a troupe called 'Little Wonders' consisting of children with singing talent. The troupe formed in 1993, which is used to do musical shows around the world.
The duo together had worked on 400 films as music composers. Their last film was Pratigyabandh in 1991. However Kalyanji died on August 24, 2000 after a prolonged illness. Kalyanji-Anandji's last film together was Pratigyabandh in 1991. The duo will always be remembered in the Indian Hindi Film Industry. There contribution to film music is like a treasure.
