Laxmikant Pyarelal was a music composer duo, formed by Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma. The duo ruled the Indian Hindi Film Industry in 1970s and 1980s. Despite coming from a poor family, the duo today had put themselves in the league of veteran composers like S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, Shakar Jaikishan, Kalyanji Anandji, Nayyar and Naushad. Their names are carved by golden ink in the Indian film music history.
Laxmikant was born in 1937 in relatively poor family. He grew up in the slum area of Mumbai. After death of his father, Laxmikant left his schooling after passing 4th Standard. He started doing some petty jobs in Mumbai and Pune. In his childhood he gets fascinated by the musical instrument mandolin. Laxmikant mastered in playing mandolin on his own. He was used to play it at street functions and entertain people. Later he started to play it at concerts and earn money. Before turning into music composition, he was used to play mandolin for various music directors.
Pyarelal was born on September 3, 1940. His father Pt. Ramprasad Sharma was a renowned trumpeter. Pyarelal took basic lessons of music from father Pt. Ramprasad Sharma. Later he learnt violin from a Goan, Anthony Gonsalves. At the age of eight, he started learning violin. Pyarelal was used to practice it for 8 to 12 hours a day. Later he started playing violin at studios like Ranjit Studios at the age of 12, to solve the financial problems of his family. Pyarelal later gave tribute to his teacher Gonsalves, by using his name for Amitabh Bachchan's character in film Amar Akbar Anthony. Music for the film was given by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Pyarelal was used play cricket with other people after working in studio. During one of such play, Laxmikant came there and asked that whether he also could join them. All the people accepted him in the play and this is how Laxmikant and Pyarelal met to each other.
Once Laxmikant played mandolin at Lata Mangeshkar concert in Radio Club, Colaba, Lataji get very impressed by his clean, polished mandolin playing and met him after the concert. Laxmikant and Pyarelal were also together at 'Sureel Kala Kendra' academy. The academy was run Mangeshkar family, where children can take music lesson and practice it. Similar age and similar family backgrounds brought the duo together. After learning the financial problem of them, Lataji recommended their names to big composers like C. Ramchandra, Sachin Dev Burman and Naushad.
Both of them started playing for composers of that time, spending long hours in recording studios. They began to get work for each other and some times were playing together whenever they got the opportunity. While enjoying a cup of tea at some restaurant in Dadar, Mumabi, Laxmikant asked Pyarelal that 'how about a hyphenated partnership?" and now the rest is history.
Whenever they were getting off recording time, Pyarelal was used to visit Bombay Chamber Orchestra and the Paranjoti Academy to perfect his skills along with other buddies like Mehli Mehta, his son Zubin Mehta, Coomi Wadia and Goody Seervai.
When the duo was not getting their payments correctly and on time, they went to Madras (Chennai) film industry to try their hand there. But same story followed at Madras as well. At the same time one thought came in Pyarelal's mind that just go to Venice and start playing for symphony orchestras like his colleague Zubin. But Laxmikant stopped him doing so.
Followed by it they worked for many renowned music directors like Kalyanji-Anandji, O. P. Nayyar, Shankar-Jaikishan, S.D. Burman and R.D. Burman. They assisted Kalyanji-Anandji for a decade from 1953 to 1963. Also they worked as music arranger for S.D. Burman (for film Ziddi) and R.D. Burman (for film Chhote Nawab). RD and Laxmikant-Pyarelal shared a good friendship between them. Even after when LP started working independently their friendship remained the same.
Laxmikant-Pyarelal now started working as independent music directors, but their first film for which they composed music was never got released. However their first film as music director gets released was Parasmani in 1963. The film was hit and also the music. They gave the hit number 'Hansta Huwa Nooraani Chehra' with their very first film. Despite that they remained assistant to Kalyanji Anandji till 1966-67.
There next major hit was Dosti in 1964. Dosti earned them their first Filmfare Award. They gave the hit numbers like 'Chaahunga Main Tujhe Saanjh Sawaren', 'Raahi Manwa' and 'Meri Dosti Mera Pyar' with this film. The song 'Chaahunga Main Tujhe' was first removed from the film, but on Rafi's insists it was kept in the film and the song also fetched a Filmfare Award for Rafi and lyricist Majrooh as well. Since then they had worked for every big director like Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Om Prakash, Manmohan Desai, Subodh Mukherjee, B.R. Chopra, Shakti Samanta to Subhash Ghai and Yash Chopra.
Their other hit films as music director includes Bobby, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Milan, Do Raaste, Inteqam, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Imtihan, Amar Akbar Anthony, Piya Ka Ghar, Aan Milo Sajna, Jeene Ki Raah, Sargam, Tejab, Karz and many more. Some of their hit numbers includes 'Hasta Huwa Nooraani Chehra', 'Jhoot Bole Kanwa Kaante', 'Suno Sajna', 'Jane Kyon Log', 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram', 'Saawan Ka Mahina', 'Bindiya Chamkegi', 'Dafliwaale Dafli Baja', and 'Ek Do Tin'.
Laxmikant-Pyarelal undoubtedly was one of the best composers of Indian Cinema. Their music varied from Indian classical, folk, semi-classical to western, Rock-n-Roll and disco style. Unfortunately Laxmikantji died on 25th May 1998 due to kidney failure, but the duo worked till 1998. They have worked on almost 500 films in their 35-year career.
