Mahalaxmi Iyer is popularly known as an Indian playback singer. She had sung in many songs in different Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telgu, Malayalam, Assamese, Gujarati, and Bengali. But she is best remembered for her Hindi and Tamil songs. Mahalaxmi's mother also is a Karnataka classical singer.

In 1992, Mahalaxmi began her career with singing jingles for the big production houses. The same time music composer Ilayaraja called her to sing for the world pageant. Later he also called her back from Madras to sing a Tamil song. Although her mother tongue is Tamil, she is more familiar with Hindi and Marathi because she brought up in Mumbai.

Mahalaxmi was one of the luckiest singers who got break in Bollywood from a renowned composer AR Rehman. Rehman gave her opportunity to sing in film Dil Se (1998). Although it was not a full-fledged song, Mahalaxmi did a piece of work pakhi pakhi pardesi or ai ajnabi in Dil Se. Soon after she also worked with the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for film Dus.

She later sung for films like Dillagi in 1999, Mission Kashmir in 2000. Mahalaxmi worked with Anu Malik in Yaadein (2001), while MM Kareem's Sur in 2002 was also a good music. The song 'Jab Sham Dhale Aana' from Sur was Mahalaxmi's one of the hit songs. Along with these composers, Mahalaxmi also has worked with composers like Sajid-Wajid, Jatin-Lalit and Nadeem-Shravan as well.

Along with big composers, she also has worked with big banners of Bollywood. Mahalaxmi had sung for many films of Yash Raj banner like Bunty Aur Babli (2005), Salaam Namaste (2005), Fanaa (2006), Dhoom 2 (2006), and the recent film Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007), and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007).

During her career, her hit songs includes 'Kabhi Sham Dhale Toh Mere' from Sur, 'Chhalka Chhalka' from Saathiya, 'Chup Chup Ke' from Bunty Aur Babli, Dil Laga Na from Dhoom 2, 'Bol Na Halke Halke' from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, 'Aaj Ki Rat' from Don, and 'Ta Ra Rum Pum' from Ta Ra Rum Pum. All these hits on her credit put her in the lead with other popular singers like Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal.
