Manisha Koirala was born on 16th August 1970 in Kathmandu (Nepal). She is from political family. Her grandfather, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala was Prime Minister of the Nepal. She completed her schooling from Army Public School, New Delhi. From the childhood she wanted to become a doctor but due to modeling her interest divert towards Bollywood. She has one brother, Siddhartha Koirala who is also an actor. She completed diploma in the filmmaking from the New York.
She performed her first film named "Saudagar" released in 1991. Film was directed by Subhash Ghai. Film was biggest hit of the year and she becomes star over night. She then performed with many film directors of the Bollywood. She gives many super hit films such as "1942: A Love Story" in 1994 directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Tamil film "Bombay" in 1995 directed by Mani Ratnam, and the film "Akele Hum Akele Tum" in 1995 directed by Mansoor Khan and co-star was Amir Khan. For the film "Bombay" she won Filmfare Award for Best Performance and for "Akele Hum Akele Tum" nomination for the Best Actress.
Year 1996 was very lucky for Manisha Koirala. In this year she gave many hit performances. Some of her hit roles such as played role of tattered wife of physic husband in film "Agni Sakshi' opposite with Nana Patekar, Film was hit on the box office and was one of from grossing hit film. Her next film during the same year was "Khamoshi: The Musical" directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and played role of daughter of deaf guardians. She got second Filmfare Award for Best Actress and Star Award for Best Performance for this film.
In 1997, her biggest hit film was "Gupt" The Hidden truth" performed with Bobby Deol and Kajol. She performed next film with Mani Ratnam was "Dil Se" in 1998 and co-stars were Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta. Manisha then performed many hit and flopped films. Manisha played main role in multi starred film "Lajja" released in 2001 directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. In this film other stars were Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Rekha, Mahima Chaudhry and Madhuri Dixit. Her next successful film was "Grahan".
In year 2002, she got Filmfare Award for the film "Company" directed by Ram Gopal Verma. After 2003 she started to perform in low budget films such as "Escape From Talibaan" and "Market". She took diploma in film making and produces and starred in film "Paisa Vasool". She performed with Sushmita Sen in this film but film was not hit on the box office.
She performed Tamil movies also and her leading roles in the films like "Bombay" with Arvind Swami, "Indian" with Kamal Haasan, "Mudhalvan" with Arjun, "Aalavandhan" with Kamal Haasan, "Baba" with Rajnikanth, and film "Mumbai Express" again with the actor Kamal Haasan. Her current released film was "Anwar" in 2007 in which she was played supporting role. After a long time she played leading role in film "Tulsi" with the actor Irrfan khan.
