Mithunda was born on 16th June 1947 in Barisal which is now in Bangladesh. He was took education from college in Calcutta. There he took undergraduate degree in B.Sc Chemistry. Then he completed his graduation from Television and Film Institute of India.

Mithun got married with Yogita Bali who is actress. He has three sons and one daughter. One of his sons, Mimoh Chakraborty is entering into film industry. His first film launched into the year 2007. During the year 1986 he involved with the actress Shridevi. But this relationship was ended by the Shridevi when she found that Mithun had not taken divorce from his wife Yogita Bali.

Mithun did his first film Mrigayya which was released in the year 1976 and directed by Mrinal Sen. For this film he got National Award. He also performed supporting roles. Some of his films as a supporting role were Do Anjaane released in the year 1976, Phool Khilen Hain Gulshan Gulshan released in the 1977. These films were not profitable for him. He became famous from the film Suraksha released in the year 1979. This was a low budget film and directed by Ravikant Nagaich. His most hit film was a Disco Dancer which released in 1982. This was a musical film and hit because of its music and Mithun's dance. After this film he was very popular and had very fans. After this film he again did two musical films such as Kasam Paida Karane Wale Ki released in 1984 and Dance Dance in 1987. After these three musical films he showcased as a very talented break dancer.

He played different types of characters in the films. He performed many hit films in which he played romantic role as well as family play also. Some of his films of this category were Mujhe Insaf Chaahiye released in 1983, Pyaar Jhukata Nahin in1985, Swarg Se Sundar in 1986 and Pyaar Kaa Mandir released in 1988. These films were not so hit on box office but they were commercially successful. He also played action films and worked opposite to the heroines such as Rati Aganihotri, Zeenat Aman, Rekha, Padmini Kolhapure, Shridevi, Madhuri Dixit and many more.

Mithun played many roles and got the Awards for these roles such as Filmfare Award for supporting role in the film Agneepath in year 1990, Filmfare Awards for Best Villain in the film Jallad and many more. From 1990s Mithun gets apart from the acting and moved to the Ooty. In Ooty he started the business. During 1994-1999, he was at top in paying tax from the India.

He made his comeback in the film industry from the film Elaan released in the year 2005 but was not hit. After comeback, his first hit film was Guru released in the year 2007. This was directed by Mani Ratnam.
