Poornima is a noted Nepali singer who sings in Nepali, Hindi and Marathi. She is considered a niche name for Nepali music industry. Poornima kicked off her music career as a singer when she sang 'Hai Na Bolo Bolo' along with Suman Kalyanpur and Pratibha as a child artist in the Ramesh Sippy directed movie 'Andaz' in 1971. The song went on to become one of the chartbusters for the year.

She has also sung various Nepali songs but the most famous has been 'Ali Ali Haar Ho' from the movie 'Sindur' in 1980.

Meanwhile, Poornima is mostly remembered for her famous song 'Tera Mujhse Pehle Ka Naata Koi' from Aa Gale Lag Ja and 'Kya Hua Tera Waada' from Hum Kisise Kum Nahin. Both the songs earned her the nominations for best playback singer award for the prestigious Filmfare Awards.

Later she also sang the hit number 'Chane Ke Khet Me' from Shah Rukh Khan-Madhuri Dixit starrer 'Anjam'. She has also been a prominent feature in most of the earlier David Dhavan movies like Coolie No. 1(1995), Judwaa (1997), Hero No. 1 (1998) and Biwi No. 1 (1998) amongst others.

Poornima's original name is Sushma Shresth and she took Poornima as her professional name.

When it comes to singing the song 'Hai Na Bolo Bolo' in 1971 at a mere age of just 9, she could be considered as the oldest singer in the Indian music industry in terms of experience. Obviously who amongst today's singers can boast of working with greats like Naushad, Madan Mohan, Anil Biswas, C. Ramchandra, SD Burman and Shankar Jaikishan?

Poornima's first break happened when Chandrakant Bhosle, a family friend recommended her name to the music director duo Shankar-Jaikishan and as a result she met Shankar. They give her the chance to sing as the child artist for the song 'Hai Na Bolo Bolo'. Mohammad Rafi was so impressed by her singing that he presented her a note of 100 rupees after the recording.

Later she kept singing for many directors. Her marriage put a temporary halt to her singing career as she stopped doing stage shows and concerts. As a result, it made offers dry up for her gradually. Poornima's last song as Sushma Shreshtha was 'Itni Shakti Hame Dena Daata' from Ankur.

She wanted a change and some of her close relatives suggested that a name change would work wonders for you. She believed and changed her name to Poornima. And it worked for her big time as Maa's song 'Barsaat Ka Mahina' was a resounding success.
