S. Janaki is an Indian female playback singer. Because of her voice modulation capabilities, she is also referred to as the 'Melody Queen Of South India'. She has sung in many Indian languages but mostly in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.
S. Janaki is also a very good lyricist and music composer in Tamil and Telugu movies. With a career spanning five decades till date, she has sung more than 20,000 songs in different languages and won 4 National Awards For Best Female Playback Singer and also 31 Awards from different states which is quite a landmark.
She made a formidable team with noted singer and dubbing artist, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and famous music director Illayaraja and is considered as one of the greatest musical combinations ever in South Indian music industry.
S. Janaki was born on 23rd April, 1938 in a Telugu Brahmin family in Pallapatla, Repalle village, in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. As most of the music geniuses are, she was also very interested in music from her early days of life and as a result gave her first public performance at an age of 9. She wanted to learn the basics of music to become a singer in future and as a result she took music training from Sree Paidiswamy, a Nadswaram Vidwan.
Professional Singing Career
S. Janaki started professional singing at the age of 19 and moved to Chennai on the advice of her uncle and joined the famous AVM Studios as a singer. Her singing career in movies started finally when she sang for the Tamil movie 'Vidhiyin Vilayattu' in 1957 under the music director T. Chelapati Rao.
She went on to become a favorite singer of music director Illayaraja and also a phase came when she sang 2-3 songs per movie in the four South Indian languages. She sang in almost all South Indian movies that released in 1980s and 1990s.
As she was a good lyricist too, she penned for many Tamil and Telugu movies as well. Other than the four South Indian languages, she went on to sing for Hindi, Sinhalese, Bengali, Oriya, English, Sanskrit, Konkani, Tulu, Saurashtra, Baduga, Japanese and German.
She is also a devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba and Lord Krishna and also sang various Hindi devotional songs dedicated to Meera.
S. Janaki was married to V. Ramprasad and has a son Murli Krishna, another actor in Tamil industry. She is now settled in Chennai and lives with his son and her daughter in-law Uma Murli Krishna, a classical dancer.
