S.P. Balasubrahmanyam is an Indian playback singer who hails from southern India but made it big in Hindi movies. He shot to fame in bollywood when 'Maine Pyar Kiya' released and since then went on to croon many super hit numbers.

He also sings for Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films as well. He is a very known voice down south. He is popularly known as Balu and S.P.B. He has also won National Award for Best Playback Singer six times.

S.P. Balasubrahmanyam has sung more than 50000 songs in 15 different languages for a career spanning four decades and counting.

He is the only Indian singer to have achieved the National Award across four languages. He has also received Padmashri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011.

Early Life

S.P. Balasubrahmanyam was born on 4th June, 1946 in a Telugu Brahmin family in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. He was inclined towards music since his childhood days and used to listen to Tamil and Telugu songs and wanted to make it big one day in his life.

Personal Life

He is married to Savitri and has two brothers and five sisters. He is also the elder brother of the well-known singer S.P. Sailaja. He has a daughter, Pallavi and a son called S.P.B. Charan, also a known singer.


S.P. Balasubrahmanyam made his singing debut on 15th December, 1966 with the film Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna, a film scored by his guru S.P. Kodandapani.

Since then he became very popular because he has a very soulful voice and has a unique style of rendering the songs. His mentor S.P. Kodandapani was also responsible for shaping up his career.

Later on he became one of the most successful singers for south Indian films. He was so much dedicated to music that language could not act as a barrier and as a result went onto sing for 15 Indian languages.

S.P. Balasubrahmanyam made his Hindi film debut as a singer in the film 'Ek Duje Ke Liye' (1986) and also received the National award for best playback singer male. His songs in Maine Pyaar Kiya became extremely successful and as a result he became the voice of Salman Khan as he sang most of his songs from 1989 to 1995.

He has hosted many TV shows in Telugu, Kannada and Tamil languages and won accolades for them. He has also performed in live shows and concerts in India and abroad.

Voice Acting

S.P. Balasubrahmanyam has also provided voice over for actors like Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, K. Bhagyaraj, Gemini Ganeshan, Nagesh, Karthik, Raghuvarana and Salman Khan in various languages. He was also awarded the 'Best Dubbing Artist' award for dubbing for Suman in the movie Annamayya.


Along with other 150 plus awards he got for singing various songs for various languages, he also received three Filmfare Awards for Mozhi for song 'Kannal Pesum Penne' (Tamil) in 2007, Sri Ramadasu for song 'Adigadigo (Telugu) in 2006 and for Maine Pyaar Kiya for the song 'Dil Deewaana' in 1989 in Hindi.
