Salim Merchant is a famous music director born and brought up in Bhuj, Gujarat, India. He is the brother of Sulaiman Merchant, a music director and they are a hit pair in bollywood film industry. Salim Merchant got his first success only after 6 years after he made his debut in Hindi movies along with his brother Suliaman as a musical duo.
His big bollywood moment came when he along with his brother composed music for the horror flick 'Bhoot' and was appreciated as the music was a major factor to make the film a big success. The music in the award winning movie 'Iqbal' earned him rave reviews from critics.
Professional Music Career
Salim Merchant along with his brother Sulaiman Merchant is considered one of the top music composers of present Hindi music industry. Besides being a composer, Salim Merchant is also a quality singer. His song 'Tere Bina' from the movie 'Kal Kisne Dekha' is still ruling the chartbusters on most of the music and FM channels even 2 years after its release.
He along with his brother has been composing some quality yet foot tapping music for more than a decade. His most prominent work includes music scores in films like 'Neal 'n' Nikki', 'Chak De India', 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' and of course 'Fashion'.
Salim Merchant has also composed for many Indipop performers like Viva, Asmaan, Shweta Shetty, Style Bhai and Jasmine among others.
He got his first break when noted producer and director Karan Johar gave him a chance to compose music for 'Kaal'. He along with his brother Sulaiman composed a foot tapping music and it won appreciation from critics and listeners alike.
Since then he has not looked back and worked with some of the greatest names in the Hindi film industry like Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and Ram Gopal Varma.
Before he started composing music for movies, he was composing background score for films and was successful in the genre as well.
Salim Merchant was one of the judges for the fifth edition of the singing reality show, 'Indian Idol' on Sony Entertainment Channel.
2010 FIFA World Cup
He with his music director brother, Sulaiman Merchant collaborated with South African singers Eric Wainaina and Loyiso Bala and recorded the anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The anthem is a song called 'Africa- You're A Star'.
He won the Filmfare Award for his background score in the movie, Krrish. The music director duo won many other awards as well.
