Shitla Pandey popularly known as Sameer is one of the lead lyricist in Indian film industry. The man who started his career in 1983 is busiest lyricist today. Every alternate music CD may include his name printed on it. Sameer holds several awards on his name including three Filmfare Awards. Sameer's career get kick started with the film 'Aashiqi'. He has done over 4000 songs in over 500 films. He penned lyrics for Hindi as well as Bhojpuri films.
His father Anjaan (Shri Lalji Pandey) was also a popular lyricist. Sameer was born in a small village near to Banaras. He is post-graduate in commerce from Benaras Hindu University. Before turning into a full time lyricist, Sameer had done a bank job for some time. But he was an artist and had some different plan in his mind. He came to Mumbai to try his hand in Bollywood.
When Sameer took the decision to try his hand in Bollywood, his whole family was against him including his one time lyricist father Anjaan. The whole family was worried about the risk of the film line. But Sameer followed his dream and today he is one of the premier lyricists of the industry. While his father's name helped him to get attention from film makers and music directors. But he was almost a newcomer in the industry and had lot things to prove. He was a son of well known lyricist, so somebody was expecting lot from him. While others were doubtful about his skills. Some was thinking that he is just trying his hand and not actually serious.
Sameer get his first chance with the film 'Bekhabar' in 1983. He wrote the song 'Gori Pareshan Hai Kali Pareshan Hai' for it. While he get widely recognized with the film 'Dil'. The film was hit and also all the songs from the film became hit. Music for the film was given by Anand-Milind, but all the attention was grabbed the words of new lyricist Sameer.
His next film which created rage was 'Aashiqui'. The film was hit and what stands out most from the film was its music. Sameer's lyric along with composer Nadeem-Shravan's music created magic at that time. This Gulshan Kumar film launched both Sameer and Nadeem-Shravan's career. For many music lovers Aashiqui is still a favorite music album for them. Since then Sameer never turned back.
Sameer found a good rapport with music directors Anand-Milind and Nadeem-Shravan. For some time he was used to work only with Nadeem-Shravan and Anand-Milind. But the association came to end when his guide Gulshan Kumar gets murdered and soon after composer friend Nadeem get imprisonment in the same case. To get over of all this Sameer left Mumbai for Varanasi.
But the artist came back to work and started working with 'Haseena Maan Jaayegi'. This time he did the film with music director Anu Malik. This time he worked at breakneck speed. He recorded around 3500 songs in ten years creating a record sort of thing. His other well-known writings includes films Deewaana, Sajan, Hum Hai Raahi Pyaar Ke, Ghulam, Soldier, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, to name a few. Sameer also had penned lyrics for many No.1 Govinda films.
Not only Nadeem-Shravan and Anand-Milind, Sameer has worked with many other music directors from R. D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Illyaraja, Bappi Lahiri, Viju Shah, Ajay Swami, Arun Paudwal, to Anu Malik. He has proved himself as a versatile lyricist. He had created a niche for himself and today he thinks is a creative time for him, doing some selective films.
Sameer recently bagged director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film 'Saawariya (2007)'. Sanjay approached him for an entire film. All the songs for 'Saawariya (2007)' are written by Sameer. Previously Sameer penned the song 'Bairi Piya' for Bhansali for his film 'Devdas'. But this time he approached the entire film which clearly reflects what Sameer is today in the industry.
