Shilpa Rao, originally hailing from Jamshedpur, started off her career as a singer in Bollywood from 2006. Her father, S. V. Rao, has been a highly acclaimed musician. He brought in his daughter in the world of music.
Shilpa Rao took her music lessons from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. She sang with Shankar Mahadevan in a concert and received advise and help from Hariharan and Mahadevan. Initially she rendered many ad jingles before finally recording for 'Tosey Naina Laage' from 'Anwar' in 2007.
She continuously kept on recording for 'Salaam-E-Ishq', 'The Train', 'Gandhi My Father', 'Dev D', 'Paa', 'Lafangey Parindey', 'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu', 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan', 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' over the years. One of her chartbuster songs from 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' was 'Khuda Jaane'. Her song 'Ek Lau' from 'Aamir' is a soulful rendition that received huge critical appreciation in 2008. Lately, she also sang 'Malang' from 'Dhoom 3' in 2013.
She sang at the MTV Ray-Ban Never Hide Sounds Concert. She also sings for a Band, 'Band Called Nine', with lyricist Neelesh Mishra and music director Amartya Rahut. The Band released its first album titled as 'Rewind' in 2011.
She also appeared in Star World's Season 1 of 'The Dewarists', Season 1 of MTV Unplugged and Season 2 of MTV Coke Studio. She also rendered the track 'Bekaboo' for Star Plus' serial 'Navya'.
