Sulakshana Pandit is an Indian Filmfare Award winning playback singer and actor. Her sister is Vijeta Pandit who gained fame with the movie 'Love Story' along with Kumar Gaurav. Her brothers are the famous music director duo Jatin-Lalit. Her uncle Pandit Jasraj is also a great classical vocalist. Her brother in-law is acclaimed music director Aadesh Shrivastava.

Early Life & Background

Sulakshana Pandit was born on 9th July, 1953 in a family of musicians. As a result even she became influenced by the charm of music at an early age and dreamed of becoming an actor and singer.

Professional Career

Sulakshana Pandit's acting career surged in 70s and early 80s when she teamed with leading actors like Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Rakesh Roshan and Raj Babbar. Her debut movie 'Uljhan' came in 1975 and has Sanjeev Kumar opposite her.

Some of her popular films are Uljhan, Hera Pheri, Sankoch, Apnapan, Khandaan, Raaz, Thief Of Bhagdad, Chehre Pe Chehra, Dharam Kanta and Waqt Ki Deewar.

She also acted in a Bengali movie called Bondie in which she was paired opposite Uttam Kumar.

Sulakshana Pandit also had a singing career along side her acting career. She began her singer career with the hit song 'Saaat Samindar Paar Se' as a child artist along with Lata Mangeshkar in 1967 for the film 'Taqdeer'.

Later, she sang for famed music directors like Hemant Kumar and Kishore Kumar. She sang in Hindi, Bengali, Oriya, Gujarati and Marathi.

Personal Life

Though Sulakshana's professional life was a success, her personal life was not a bed of roses. She has never been married. Her marriage proposal was turned down by actor Sanjeev Kumar as he was not able to cope with the heartbreak he got after actress Hema Malini rejected his proposal to marry Dharmendra. Presently, her health has deteriorated. Vijeta Pandit and Aadesh Shrivastava are taking care of her. Her health is a serious issue as she has been hospitalized on many occasions.

In 1980, she released an album called 'Jazbaat' on the HMV label wherein she sang ghazals, a Sufiaana form of singing.
