Suresh Wadkar is one of the most talented Indian classical and film playback singer. He born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1954. He began singing from the very young age. At the age of 10, he started learning music from Pandit Jialal Vasant. Pandit Jialal Vasant was impressed very much with Suresh Wadkar's voice quality. Suresh started performing on stage from the very young age.
After learning the basics of Indian classical music, Suresh entered the Sur-Singar singing competition in 1976. He turned out to be victorious from the competition. He won the competition which was judged by great composers like Jaidev.
Suresh Wadkar got his first break in Bollywood films as a playback singer with the film Gaman in 1978. It was composer Jaidev, who gave him first his chance to sing. He sang the song 'Seene Mein Jalan' for the film. Followed by it he also sung for film Paheli in 1977.
The second person who get impressed with his singing was the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. She recommended his name to many music composers and directors like Kalyanji-Anandji, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Khayyam. The music composers also soon get impressed with his talent and started recording with him. He sung the duet 'Chal Chameli Bagh Mein' for Laxmikant-Pyarelal in film Krodhi (1981). Later he gave many hits with Laxmikant-Pyarelal in films Prem Rog (1982), Hum Paanch and Pyasa Sawan.
Prem Rog along with Laxmikant-Pyarelal turned out as biggest hit for Suresh Wadkar. He sung all the four songs for actor Rishi Kapoor in film Prem Rog. He also formed a successful history with composers Kalyanji-Anandji. With Kalyanji-Anandji, he gave a major hit 'Hathon Ki Chand Lakeeron Ka' in film Vidhaata (1982).
Despite being sung many light filmy songs he was termed as semi-classical singer later. He is the most talented singer in the industry, but he didn't turn out as successful as other singers like Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan. Along with Bollywood songs, he also had released his private albums. He also had lent his voice for Marathi films as well.
He is the one who worked with almost every musician in the Indian film industry like Jaidev, Chitragupta, R.D. Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Khaiyyam, A.R. Rehman, Anu Malik, Bappi Lahiri, Ilayaraja, Hridayanath Mangeshkar, Usha Khanna, Ravindra Jain and many others.
He also had worked for big productions like Yash Chopra, Raj Kapoor Studios, G.P. Sippy, Subhash Ghai, Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai, to name a few. Although the singer is not recording many songs now, he recently had sung for films like Jai Santoshi Maa (2006), Omkara (2006) and Ramji Londonwaley (2005). He also turned out as a composer, who had composed music for few Marathi films. He keeps himself busy cutting private devotional albums.
Suresh Wadkar is currently appearing as a judge to a critically acclaimed TV singing talent show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs 2007'. He is occupying the khurchi (chair) of judge along with singer Sonu Nigam.
