Sushmita was born on 19th November 1975 in Andhra Pradesh. She is from Bengali family. Her father, Shubeer Sen was commander of Indian Air Force Wing and mother is Subhra Sen who was jewelery artist and fashion desigher. She has one brother, Rajeev and one sister is Neelam Sen. Sushmita adopt a girl named as Renee. She is single mother of Renee.

Sushamita Sen won the title "Miss India" in 1994. In the contest of Miss India, twenty-two girls were participated along with Aishwarya Rai. Her mother gave her courage for participating in the contest. At the ending of contest, there was tie-breaking question for Aishwarya and Sushmita and Sushmita got the chance for Miss Universe.

During Miss Universe contest, at the starting she was at the third rank. Preliminary winners were Miss Colombia Carolina Gomez, and Miss Greece Rea Totounzi. She then moved to second rank. Miss Colombia and Miss Venezuela Minorka Mercado and Sushmita went into final and Sushmita Sen become first "Miss Universe" from India in 1994.

After winning Miss Universe, she moved towards Acting. She performed her first movie named as "Dastak" released in 1996. In this film she performed with Sharad Kapoor but the film was flopped on box office. Her next film "Ratchagan" which was in Tamil was much hit. After two years she got chance in film "Biwi No.1" directed by David Dhawan. This film becomes hit on box office. Film was released in 1999 and won Filmfare Award for Supporting Actress. Her super hit film was "Main Hoon Na" released in 2004 and performed with Shahrukh Khan. She played role of lawyer in the film "Main Aisa Hi Hoon" with the actor Ajay Devgan. In the film "Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya" released in 2005 performed with Salaman Khan. She also performed with Shahrukh Khan in the film "Dulha Mil Gaya" released in 2007.
